Searching by color

Color is a fundamental pillar in visual reference research for creatives. It’s often something words can only describe vaguely. That’s why we’re proud to introduce the color search feature, which allows users with more advanced needs to search for images whose palette matches a precise color of your choice.

This is extremely useful for research: you can explore the whole catalog of images on Currents by color. It’s also helpful in your own library: you can now filter by collection and color in organize mode, to find something you saved months ago and had completely forgotten about.

Most of the time, color only makes sense in a search when it’s coupled with a subject: if you’re searching for an outfit, and you only want the ones with that particular deep-sea-blue accent, you don’t want random underwater pictures of fish to be included in your search. This is why Currents allows you to include a description when you search by color, getting accurate results for requests like “images about outfits that feature deep-sea-blue color”.

Color search is designed for power users, that’s why it’s reserved for supporters. To let you try it out and understand if it’s something useful for you, you’ll be able to do 5 color searches for free. We believe this feature strongly increases the value you can find by deciding to support our project financially, allowing the project to keep existing while getting a powerful tool for your work.

The color search isn’t the only thing we’ve been working on: you can now set your preference for gif auto-play in the settings, so all the moving parts don’t distract you while exploring Currents. A good amount of UI tweaks have been made too.

The focus now will fully be on shipping the highly requested mobile apps for Android and iOS. Once they’re on the stores, we’ll proceed with the most urgent fixes and features you’ve been asking for.
